Our Safety Week 2019: East Midlands Airport

The team at East Midlands Airport share the successes from their 2019 Safety Week, which won the award for Best Overall Campaign…
East Midlands Airport ran a very successful Airports safety Week campaign in 2019, resulting in the Safety Team being announced as AOA Best Overall Safety week winners.
Planning for the week started very early and, in March, members of the EMA Rescue and Fire Fighting team, Airfield Operations and staff from Jet2.com visited local schools to talk about the theme for the week – ‘Your Safety and Our Safety’. This event provided an opportunity for local children to learn about a range of risks posed to air travel and the safety measures required to prevent them. The children were invited to design a poster and the winning design would be used to promote Airports Safety week, the winners were then invited for a tour of the Airport during Airports Safety week for all of their hard work.
During Safety week there were a wide range of events were across seven days, from early morning until early evening allowing all staff, handling agents and third parties to attend, regardless of shift patterns.
Events included:
- ATC simulator session
- Road Safety and Vehicle safety sessions
- CPR demonstrations
- First Aid training
- practical fire training
- hazard spotting competitions
- FOD walks
- wellbeing sessions
- bear hunts
- personal training sessions and mind-mapping.
Passengers and staff were also entertained by an early morning Flashmob from Rockchoir UK to raise money for a local charity. The week ended with a fun-filled community day at the Aeropark Museum where over 500 people attended, engaging with airport staff and learning about Airport Safety. The Airport Fire team thrilled the children and parents with a drive-by vehicle demonstration.
Key to the success of the week was the variety of events but also the commitment and engagement from everyone across the site, from staff who arranged the week to participants. The week was also well-promoted through our communications channels
Engagement seen across the site during the week was great to see. We received just under 200 completed feedback forms from staff alone and the events attracted interest from the local media print, online and broadcast media. There were also 44,000 reaches on Facebook!
